World Metrology Day: Minister Pledges Support For Accurate Measurement—-The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr Adeniyi Adebayo, has pledged his continued support for accurate measurement in trade transactions and other metrological activities.
Adebayo made the pledge during the commemoration of the World Metrology Day celebration on Friday in Lagos.
Metrology is the scientific discipline related to measurement and its uses in scientific fields, innovation, industries, trading, medicine and other fields.
World Metrology Day is celebrated annually on May 20, with this year’s theme being, “Metrology in the Digital Era.”
The day highlights the necessity of precise measurement units and the contribution of every individual in metrology organisations and institutes.
According to Adebayo, the global uniformity of measurement ensures the comparability of measurements, promotes trade and reduction of trade barriers.
He explained that the science of measurement had contributed immensely to the economic and social development of the society.
“In the economic space, accurate measurement ensures accountability in the determination of the quantity of goods and products purchased by consumers are accurate and just.
“It ensures consumers protection and safety in the aviation sector and ensures that the amount of active ingredients in medicines are accurately determined for the safety of lives and well-being of users.
“Therefore, the need for accurate measurement in aviation, trade, health, oil and gas production, power, transportation, water, banking, telecommunication, food processing, is patently obvious,” he said.
The minister said, in tandem with the celebration, it was pertinent for the Weights and Measures Dept., to leverage existing digital technology in the provision of verification activities and Nigeria’s revenue generation drive.
Adebayo said the application of digital technology in the provision of legal metrology services would be a steady and determined process to ensure a reliable digital transformation.
He added that this would require the efforts and cooperation of all stakeholders in the metrology community.
Adebayo said as part of commitment to the department, the ministry inaugurated a committee to review the Weights and Measures Act and other relevant Technical Regulations.
He added that this was to ensure that the department was adequately prepared to meet the current and future challenges in its enforcement activities.
“The whole country is looking up to the department to ensure that legal metrology is properly implemented to ensure fair trade, safety on the highways and protection of the environment,” he said.
He advised the department to digitise its operations in conformity to the directive from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
Adebayo was represented by Engr. Usman Abdulkarim, Lagos Zonal Coordinator, Weights and Measures Department, in the ministry.
