Africa’s leading one-stop online travel agency, Travelstart has launched a fresh campaign on how travelers can get the best deals without having to surf the internet during the Black Friday sales period.
In a communique made available to the media on Friday, it was disclosed that the travel agency is working on a perfect and cheapest deals for travellers as they plan their vacations for the festive season.
As the date of the planned Black Friday draws closer, the agency added that it will be interesting to go into the history behind the popular event where the sales usually spell out the chaos as not many people know how it came to be.
The story goes as far back as 24 September 1869 when two financial ringleaders tried to corner the US gold market and bought as much gold as possible, hoping the scarcity would drive the price up to and they’d stand to make an enormous profit. Unfortunately, word got out of their conspiracy and the stock market plummeted by over 20 percent in little more than a week, causing financial ruin for many investors and the general public. Hence, this financial crisis was labeled “Black Friday”.
A more recent version of its history fast-forwards to the 1950s in Philadelphia when frenzied crowds of shoppers and tourists would flock into the city the Friday after Thanksgiving, before the Army-Navy football game held on that Saturday. Everyone else had the day off to hit the shops, while the police had to work extra-long shifts to keep unruly crowds in check. They soon coined the dreaded workday “Black Friday”.
However, it wasn’t until the early 90s that the phrase caught on and spread across media campaigns throughout the United States. It was during this time that businesses recognized this day as extremely profitable, turning over large numbers that put them “in the black” (profitable) as opposed to “in the red” (making losses).
Travellers are advised not to scramble through endless queues as practiced back then before getting the best deals during Black Friday as it promises that the cheapest airfare deals will be reachable for all on its user friendly website at the comfort of their locations.
It also added the airfare deals will cover both local and international tourism destinations such as Calabar, Port Harcourt, Abuja, Seychelles, Dubai, Brazil, Berlin, among other choice cities.
Asides for flight bookings, the agency also leverages on its partnership with hospitality companies cutting across Africa, Europe, Oceania, North America for best deals on pocket-friendly hotel reservations and tour guides.
