Ogun INEC Commissioner, Niyi Ijalaye has passed away in Abuja
The Genius Media reports that the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for Ogun State, Barrister ‘Niyi Ijalaye, has passed away.
Barrister Ijalaye reportedly collapsed and died in Abuja on Monday evening after attending a meeting of RECs at INEC’s headquarters. The cause of death remains unknown.
A source, speaking anonymously, revealed that Ijalaye had returned to his hotel room after the meeting when the incident occurred. It was noted that the Ondo-born administrator had been in good spirits throughout the meeting before retiring to his hotel in the Federal Capital Territory.
The meeting, as noted by INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu in a statement on the commission’s official Facebook page, focused on the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States, as well as seven vacant positions in the National and State Assemblies.
Barrister Ijalaye, dressed in a blue striped kaftan with a red cap, was seen in photos from the meeting shared by the commission. He had been posted to Ogun State in March 2022, following the transfer of Olusegun Agbaje to Lagos State.
