United States, China and the crowd inside Arena Bercy were treated to the most thrilling of finishes.

The Americans were hot favourites; they had won 60 Olympic Games matches in a row spanning 32 years, but they were pushed to the limit by France.

With 3.8 seconds left on the clock, United States led by three. France launched the ball to star player Gabby Williams, who got her shot off and found the target. But the prospect of overtime was dashed as her foot was narrowly inside the arc.

It was ultimately disappointment for China, but they ended the final day with a gold medal courtesy of Li Wenwen in the women’s +81kg weightlifting.

While Team USA’s women’s basketball team got them over the line, Jennifer Valente did her bit on the final day with victory in the women’s omnium.

Host nation France finished fifth with 16 golds and 64 medals overall.
