Manchester City ended their Community Shield hoodoo by beating Manchester United on penalties to claim the first piece of silverware of the season.

 

The traditional season curtain-raiser has seen Manchester City claim early bragging rights over rivals Manchester United courtesy of a penalty shootout win at Wembley. After Alejandro Garnacho’s opener was cancelled out by Bernardo Silva, missed spot-kicks from Jadon Sancho and Johnny Evans handed Pep Guardiola’s side the win.

 

The Community Shield has seen Manchester City claim early bragging rights over rivals Manchester United courtesy of a penalty shootout win at Wembley.

 

United thought that they’d won it in the closing stages when substitute Alejandro Garnacho produced a cool finish past Ederson to score against City at Wembley once again. Erik ten Hag’s men had enjoyed the better of the chances, with Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay each squandering guilt-edged opportunities before Garnacho made the breakthrough.

 

But City weren’t about to lose their fourth Community Shield match in a row without a fight, as Bernardo Silva popped up with a header to force the first ever Manchester Derby penalty shootout. Bernardo’s miss in the shootout gave United confidence until Jadon Sancho missed his own spot kick and Jonny Evans blazed over, giving Manuel Akanji the chance to slot win it – and he did.
