The 31-year-old midfielder, a former La Masia graduate, had become the Catalans’ main target to reinforce the pivot position after they missed out on the capture of Marcelo Brozovic.
Negotiations with Girona have been going on for a while now and a breakthrough was finally made this past weekend.
As per widespread reports, Barcelona will be paying around €5 million plus add-ons to sign Romeu from their local rivals. In addition, Pablo Torre will be moving in the other direction on loan.
It had been reported that an official announcement could be made on Monday. And now Gerard Romero is claiming that Romeu is not training with Girona currently as he is in Barcelona to undergo his medicals.
Once that is completed, an announcement will be made imminently, meaning all signs point towards Romeu’s return to his boyhood club being confirmed today itself.
In that case, the 31-year-old would also be able to travel with the rest of the squad to the United States of America for the pre-season tour in a few days’ time.
Barcelona are scheduled to play Juventus, Arsenal, Real Madrid, and AC Milan in the pre-season friendlies and those encounters will provide Romeu with the opportunity to get to know his teammates and Xavi’s philosophies better before the start of the season.
Once the signing of Romeu is taken care of, Barcelona will likely turn their focus towards a new right-back, although player sales need to be finalised before that.
