West Ham had the ball in the back of the net for a second time when Michail Antonio pounced from close range, but the referee had adjudged Antonio to have fouled De Gea.
Erik ten Hag brought on Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho in an effort to give United more attacking potency but West Ham stood firm to see out a win and three precious points towards their bid for survival.
