The Genius Media Nigeria reports that the lifting of the ban followed approval by President Muhammadu Buhari after 222 days.
This is coming after The Chairman Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement and Director-General National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, CCIE Kashifu, in a statement in Abuja, said President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has approved the lifting of the suspension of Twitter operation in Nigeria effective from 12am tonight, 13th January 2022
Unlike before, Nigerians can now use Twitter for “business and positive engagements.
Recall, Buhari’s administration had, through the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed announced the suspension of Twitter on June 5, after the company deleted one of his tweets for violating its rules.
“As a country, we are committed to ensuring that digital companies use their platform to enhance the lives of our citizens, respect Nigeria’s sovereignty, cultural values and promote online safety,” Buhari said in a speech emailed by the presidency.
This was after the micro-blogging site deleted “genocidal” tweets from the President, Muhammadu Buhari, on the Biafran War of 1967-1970, wherein many lives were lost.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Ministry of Information and Culture which cited the “persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.” as the reason.
The Nigerian government then directed the National Broadcasting Commission to immediately commence licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.
With these, there will be No more using of VPN while longing on to Twitter.
