DG Of WTO RACE: European Union (EU) Pledges Support For Okonjo-Iweala––As the race for the post of Director General in the WTO enters its final month, the EuropeanUnion (EU) have given their support to Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee.
According to an unindentified official, the member country of the EU convoys met in Brussels on Monday to endorse Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria’s former finance minister, and Myung-hee, South Korea’s trade chief, in their bids to occupy the trade organization top position.
The Trade organization former leader, Brazilian Roberto Azevedo stepped down from the job at the end of August — a year before his term ended and now 5 people remain in the race to fill his office.
In order to finally put to rest the headwinds the organization has faced, the U.S.-China trade battle, a hobbled arbitration system and a lack of tools to tackle growing challenges such as industrial subsidies, two finalists will be announced after October 6th and a winner by November 7th
