The last surviving Chimpanzee in the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) Zoo has died at the age of 50.
The Head of Department of Zoology and Environmental Studies in the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), Prof Chris Okoye, made the revelation that the male chimpanzee has died, on Wednesday.
According to him, the Chimpanzee has since been embalmed and the female chimpanzee, usually referred as his wife (his female partner) had died five years ago.
It is believed that he has been lonely for too long and reportedly died of old age.
“As the tradition of the department, the chimpanzee has been embalmed and deposited in the department’s Museum for practical and for people on an excursion to the museum to see. We do not eat or bury animals in our zoo when they die, rather we embalm and keep them in the museum,” Prof. Okoye said.
