The magnitude 6 quake struck south of Sumbawa, a large Indonesian island home to 1.4 million people.
Its epicentre was about 219km (136 miles) south of the city of Raba, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The quake hit at a depth of 25km (16 miles), meaning the effects would have been felt on the surface.
Originally it was put down as a 6.1 quake by the USGS before being downgraded to a 6.
This was followed by a weaker quake in the same area with a magnitude of 5.2, according to Indonesia’s disaster agency.
