Family Members Vows Not To Support Bianca Ojukwu’s Bid For Senate

“A young woman who was supposedly married to my father who is late; a young woman who could remarry tomorrow maybe from Abia State or later from Sokoto State. And you want her to come and represent us. I wonder if there are no other people in Anambra South that can represent us?”

The senatorial ambition of Bianca Ojukwu, widow of the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, may have suffered a setback.

Yesterday some members of the family vowed not to support her.

She is seeking to become the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Speaking with reporters in an interview, Dr. Ike Ojukwu, directors of Ojukwu Transport Company Limited, said it would be a letdown to allow a woman from Ngwo in Enugu State to represent Anambra South Senatorial District.

According to him, “the district has several prominent people.”

Ojukwu asked: “Is she from Nnewi? She is from Ngwo in Enugu State. If you ask me, I would prefer someone who is a son of the soil, and because I come from Nnewi, I would like a Nnewi indigene to represent us.”

Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu (Jnr) said: “She is apparently coming out under APGA and that is APGA’s business. They can decide on whomever they want to bring out really, that should not be my business as far as I am concerned but I do find it curious that you want somebody from Enugu State to come and represent us at Anambra South.

Ojukwu added: “A young woman who was supposedly married to my father who is late; a young woman who could remarry tomorrow maybe from Abia State or later from Sokoto State. And you want her to come and represent us. I wonder if there are no other people in Anambra South that can represent us?

“Has anybody asked Odumegwu household whether we believe in her to represent us? This is a woman we don’t interact with. She doesn’t talk to us. She can’t cross into our properties. She can’t cross our gate in the village. She doesn’t associate with the members of the family.

“There are certain questions that would have been asked before moving in that particular direction. Like I said, APGA is free to field whoever they want to field. And I know that APC is trying to field a very credible candidate and when we get to the field of justice we will see what happens,” Ojukwu added.

Other members of the Ojukwu family that expressed concern include, Chief Debe Odimegwu Ojukwu, a legal practitioner, who also said his late father’s subsequent marriages are not legal. “Why I am arguing this is because there was a woman my father married in a court and that marriage was never nullified, and my training as a lawyer tells me that when there is a subsisting marriage, subsequent marriage or attempt at marriage becomes null and void,” he said.

But an APGA chieftain said if she wins the ticket, the party will work for her victory.
