Chevron Nigeria award cash to six students at Chris Ikomi Essay Competition

As part of her committment in boosting the quality of education in the country, American multinational oil giant, Chevron Nigeria Limited has given cash award to six secondary school students, winners of the Chris Ikomi Memorial Essay Competition.

From the senior category, Miss Precious Didikemien, 15, a student of Kpakiama School emerged winner and was rewarded with a sum of N50, 000 while Divine Ikede won in the junior category.

Elated at the turn out, the Delta state Commissioner for Education, Mr. Chiedu Ebie said since the commencement of the competition in 2001, it has continued to witness increased participation by students.

The commissioner disclosed that of the 2,352 students that participated in the competition as against 1,100 for the previous year, 150 progressed to the final stage out of which the six finalists emerged.

He reassured that his administration was committed to developing education at all levels in the state through the upgrading and provision of infrastructure in schools.

Ebie said: “Aside from the renovation of schools, three major technical colleges in Sapele, Ofagbe and Agbor have been fully upgraded in line with the administration’s focus on repositioning technical and vocational education while three others at Issele Uku, Kwale and Ogor are undergoing renovation. To improve and maintain teacher quality, the state government recently commenced the construction of the Teacher Professional Development Centre (TPDC) at Owa, Ika North East local council.
